                                                     Lemons

   Lemons are a bright sunny little fruit to paint.  I tried to show the translucency in the lemon slices and the seeds behind the thin skin on the slice.  Um-m-m-m, I could eat a slice of home made lemon meringue pie right about now.  Yum!  Or, have a lemon based margarita.........!

                                                       Turnips

  Ah, veggies!  How many of you have had your mother say “eat your vegetables”.  But turnips …. well, I like’em.  These turnips are from my neighbor’s vegetable garden.  I like the purple on their tops with a light pale yellow on their bottoms.  A natural nature color compliment.  Turnips are a fun and interesting  subject to paint.

Female Cardinal by Ann Hoffpauir

Cardinals are visitors to my yard all year round. There are several bird feeders placed where I can get a good view of the many types of birds that come to feed at them. The cardinal is the most frequent visitior. They are not shy birds. They only fly a few feet away when I come to get the feeder to refill it.

A few years ago after I had refilled a feeder, I went back to my porch and stood and watched the birds come back to feed. There was a male cardinal on the feeder and he would take his beak and push the seeds out over the side. I thought "well dang, no wonder the seeds are going so fast". As I watched though, there were more cardinals and other birds on the ground under the feeder. They looked like adult birds. I realized after awhile, they were immature birds and the male was encouraging them to eat the seeds. These young birds would try to fly up and land on the feeder. I suppose that ledge on the feeder looked like a scary precipice to land on for those young birds. It took awhile but they did it.

The Yellow Rose by Ann Hoffpauir

The Yellow Rose. How many times have we heard those three words used for so many things? The Yellow Rose of Texas, the Yellow Rose saloon, the Yellow Rose dance hall and bar bee q places. The list goes on. Somehow the yellow rose just seems to fit the great state of Texas. The song is rather catchy too.

Well, I was just ramblin' on.....ah, another song, Ramblin' Rose. Goodness, now this will be stuck in my head all day.

Apart from the yellow rose's name used for many things, the flower itself exudes grace, charm and beauty.

Orchids and Bromeliad by Ann Hoffpauir

This is a floral painting that contains exotic plants, orchids and bromeliad. I am fortunate to live in a town that hosts one of the country's best botanical gardens, Shangri La. The founder of these gardens has long passed, but his legacy lives on in this beautiful place. Wildlife, flora and fauna abound in these gardens. Painting ideas are everywhere at almost any time of year.

China Roses by Ann Hoffpauir

Here is a small painting of roses. These China roses I painted are from my yard. I purchased this plant from the Antique Rose Emporium in Brenham, Texas several years ago. At the time they had a plethora of plants. I haven't been there for some time. I wonder how they are faring during this Texas drought. This particulsar rose is not a very good cut flower as the petals start to fall off a day after cutting. Boy, this forces you to get the subject down quick. The good thing about antique roses is, they are low maintenance and not as prone to insects and disease. This floral painting is an 8x10 oil on canvas panel. The price is $200.00.
